North Carolina General Assembly to Consider Table Games at Cherokee

In the last scheduled meeting of the North Carolina legislature before Governor Bev Perdue leaves office, the administration is hoping that the lawmakers will consider an agreement between the governor and the Cherokee tribe that would bring Las Vegas-style dealers to Harrah’s Cherokee casino.

State law would have to be changed to allow table games, but the governor is pushing for the proposal which would bring an estimated 400 new jobs to the area.  There are questions about whether the negotiation process would have to begin anew if no progress is made before Perdue leaves office, since the governor is the only state official authorized to negotiate with the tribe.  Although an incoming governor might be able to rubber-stamp an existing agreement, there is no guarantee that would happen.  Instead Perdue is hoping the lawmakers will move now on the existing agreement that she approved in November.

The short legislative session is slated to begin May 16th.
